Humap

Humap is a UK-based software-as-a-service company that makes a participatory Geographic Information Systems platform designed for generating, sharing, and preserving data.

Humap requires no knowledge of GIS or coding, and no downloads or new equipment. Anyone can log in and get started, creating maps about any subject they wish. They can work alone, in a group, or invite the whole world to take part.

We have clients across the academic humanities, cultural heritage, archaeological, and ecological spheres. They use our software to:

  • Crowdsource GIS data: Humap has been used to crowdsource ecological and archaeological GIS data in the form of polygons from trained members of the public
  • Crowdsource qualitative data: including multimedia historical accounts, oral histories, testimonies etc
  • Classroom and student projects: great for getting students and pupils thinking spatially and learning how to curate digital resources
  • Visualise data to diverse audiences: portray spatial data in tandem with multimedia content and information, for example maps demonstrating changes in an area combined with photos, videos, and testimonies
  • Share their content more widely: we work with several cultural heritage organisations that use Humap to create digital exhibitions of the collections
