Accessibility Information for people with mobility challenges
from 08/12/2025 until 30/06/2026
Approximately 16% of the global population—more than one billion people—live with some form of disability. Among the many barriers they face, the limited availability of clear, reliable information about the accessibility of services remains a major obstacle, particularly in the context of leisure travel. This lack of information restricts freedom of choice and limits participation in activities such as tourism, accommodation, and transportation.
This research project, sponsored by University College London, aims to investigate both the nature of this problem and potential solutions. Specifically, it examines how accessibility information for hotels, transport services, and tourist sites can be made more accurate and trustworthy. Sharing of experience about accessibility by people travelling to the Andalucian cities of Spain such as Seville, Granada, Almeria and Malaga is part of the scope of the project.
Aim
The broad aims of the project are:
-
To understand the problem caused by the lack of online information about the accessibility of tourism journeys, including transportation, accommodation, and tourist sites.
-
To examine whether the availability of accessibility information online can be improved through public participation.
How to participate
Participants will be invited to complete an online survey that asks them to rate the accessibility of accommodations, transportation, and tourist sites in the four cities of Almería, Granada, Málaga, and Seville. The accessibility rating reflects how difficult it is to use a particular service, ranging from No Difficulty to Complete Difficulty.
Optionally, participants may also provide an explanation for their rating in their own words. For example, a wheelchair user might explain that a tourist site lacks wheelchair access to certain areas.
Needed equipment
Other than a computer or a mobile phone with internet access, no other equipment is necessary for this task.
