Aegean Baselines
from 18/09/2025 until 18/12/2030
Aegean Baselines is our Citizen Science journey to document current and future populations of sea urchins as ecosystem architects, as well as their habitats, and environmental conditions, to help understand how our ecosystem responds to environmental stressors.
Aim
Establishing the Baseline. Tracking the Change. Protecting What Matters. Understand what's normal today and detect what's wrong tomorrow.
How to participate
Bring your scuba gear and let's get down to business! You and a buddy (we always go in pairs for safety and for data quality purposes) will be trained on the project and its requirements. Your task will be to dive (or snorkel) and record the numbers of 2 types of sea urchins (arbacia lixula and paracentrotus lividus), assess their size, the depth and substrate they reside in, and also the water temperature. Other parameters may also be introduced. Please contact us at aegean.baselines@gmail.com for more information. There will be a maximum of 3 sites, each containing 5 transects of 20m. We will be surveying the sites at least 3 times a year.
Needed equipment
Scuba gear preferred. Snorkel also possible. Depending on the weather a wetsuit may be necessary.
Survey equipment (camera, quadrats, belt transects, writing material etc.) will be provided.
