Dulse Vita: Algae Services in Our Coastal Ecosystem
Dulse Vita introduced pupils in southern Brittany to local algae biodiversity and its uses through field outings, sustainable harvesting, biology lessons, cooking, gardening and cyanotype art. Students created algal herbaria, a booklet, puzzles, nomenclature cards and posters, then shared algae-based products and learning materials with families and partner schools.
Aim
The project aimed to raise awareness of algae as a valuable coastal resource for food, agriculture, textiles, medicine and biofuels. It sought to connect Montessori outdoor learning with ocean literacy by helping students observe, classify and use local marine biodiversity responsibly. A further aim was to encourage students to become stewards of their coastal environment and to share reusable educational materials with other schools.
