Writings of Memory
from 01/04/2021
Writings of
Memory is a socially meaningful digital tool—a mobile and web application—that
enables users to record, preserve, and publish the oral testimonies and
intangible cultural heritage of elderly individuals. It strengthens
intergenerational ties, promotes the active inclusion of older generations, and
enhances digital literacy of users. The app was launched in April 2021 by the
Dobra pot Institute and received the prestigious European Heritage Days
Stories Award from the Council of Europe and European Commission in 2022.
In 2025, the project was additionally recognized with the national award for Best
Intergenerational Volunteering Project by Slovene Philanthropy, underlining
its social impact and contribution to intergenerational solidarity.
Aim
The project aims
to preserve oral heritage and individual memories of older generations by
empowering citizens to document their stories using accessible digital tools.
It promotes:
- Social inclusion of older adults
- Recognition of the elderly as
guardians of memory and tradition
- Intergenerational connection
through storytelling
- Enhanced digital literacy among
participants
- Long-term preservation of
recollections for personal, educational, and research purposes
How to participate
Participants can
join via the Writings of Memory – Zapisi spomina app (mobile or web).
After registering, they can upload stories using text, images, audio, or video.
Workshops are offered in schools, libraries, and community centers to support
participation. The project provides instructional resources (e.g., interview
guides, manuals) to assist participants
Needed equipment
Participation in
the project requires only basic digital equipment. The following is suggested:
- Smartphone, tablet, or computer with internet access, used to
enter stories in the app.
- Microphone or audio recorder (optional), for capturing oral testimonies
in higher quality.
- Camera or smartphone camera (optional),
for photographing participants or objects connected to memories.
- Notebook and pen (optional), for preparing
interview questions or taking notes during conversations.
The app itself is
lightweight and can be installed directly from a browser as a Progressive Web
App (PWA). No advanced or professional equipment is required, which makes
participation accessible to everyone, regardless of age or technical expertise.
