DaWeZard - Ciência Cidadã para Caracterização de Resíduos Domésticos Perigosos (Citizen Science to characterize Household Hazardous Waste)
from 01/06/2025 until 15/02/2026
Household hazardous waste (or urban hazardous waste) refers to hazardous waste generated in households that exhibits hazardous characteristics. At present, neither the generation of this waste in Portugal nor its end-of-life management is known. If improperly managed, it can pose risks to the environment and to the health of workers in waste management systems, as well as compromise the recycling and recovery of other waste streams.
The Da WeZard project (Da: Data | We: Citizen, collaborative | Zard: Hazardous waste) is a Citizen Science project that aims to characterize and quantify household hazardous waste in Portugal. The project will start in the Municipality of Leiria, with the active participation of Scouts from the Leiria-Fátima Region and local communities.
Aim
- Quantify and monitor household hazardous waste.
- Plan: develop a municipal management plan with citizen participation.
- Raise public awareness and promote waste prevention and recycling through a collaborative, citizen science–based approach.
